Criminal Law & Defence

Criminal practice demands technical rigour and composure under pressure. Sovereign Chambers of Law represents clients at every stage of criminal process — from investigation and bail to trial, appeal, and revision — across the Magistrate Courts, the Sessions Courts, and the High Court Division.

What we handle

  • Trial representation. Defence in Sessions trials, Special Tribunal cases, Nari-o-Shishu Nirjatan Daman matters, and Magistrate-level proceedings.
  • Bail applications. Bail before the Magistrate, Sessions Judge, and High Court Division; anticipatory and post-arrest bail; bail cancellation applications; undertrial considerations.
  • Criminal appeals. Appeals under s.410, 411 and 417 CrPC from Magistrate and Sessions Court decisions to the Sessions Court and the High Court Division; appeals against acquittal.
  • Criminal revisions. Revisions under s.439 CrPC in the High Court Division; quashing of proceedings under s.561A CrPC.
  • Narcotics and specialised statutes. Narcotics Control Act 2018 matters; Special Powers Act; Anti-Corruption Commission matters; Cyber Protection Ordinance 2025 cases.
  • Cheque fraud revisions. s.138 NI Act criminal revisions for commercial bank clients and individual defendants.
  • Writ against enforcement. Writ petitions challenging investigative overreach, improper arrest, and fundamental-rights violations under Article 102 of the Constitution.

Our approach

We treat criminal defence as a matter of rigorous statutory and evidentiary analysis, not advocacy alone. Every brief begins with an examination of the FIR, charge sheet, and documentary evidence for procedural defects, contradictions, and statutory non-compliance. Where points of law arise, we develop them for appeal and revision.

Key statutes & framework

  • Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898 (CrPC)
  • Penal Code, 1860
  • Evidence Act, 1872
  • Narcotics Control Act, 2018

  • Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004
  • Special Powers Act, 1974
  • Cyber Protection Ordinance, 2025

International & specialist notes

A senior member of the chambers has acted in landmark criminal matters of national significance, including proceedings arising from the 21 August 2004 grenade attack (State v Mufti Hannan & Others) — work involving complex issues of evidence, criminal conspiracy, and constitutional law.
